Dirty Projectors annoyed the shit out of me when I first became aware of them in the wake of their Black Flag "re-imagining" album, Rise Above. Retrospectively, Rise Above isn't all that bad, but it's like the remake of Rollerball- maybe a little fun with zero expectations and the knowledge that this is a clunky, de-fanged LL Cool J action vehicle, but if I want to watch Rollerball, then I'mma watch some James Caan motherfucking ROLLERBALL. Call the new one Maximum Futuresport or some shit; don't try to trade on the niche cool of your personal influences.
I've since warmed up to David Longstreth & co, due in no small part to their recent collaborations with both Bjork and David Byrne- these in turn led me to the remarkable The Getty Address, and now this story has a happy ending.
Dirty Projectors bring it home this Sunday with a free show @ the Williamsburg Waterfront, supported by Magnolia Electric Co. & am.fm.pm favorites Crystal Antlers before hitting Europe. Cover hotness via Stereogum's Enjoyed project below.
