So about a week ago, I heard someone calling American Beauty "the worst thing to happen to cinema in the 90s". Two things:
1. Calm down, Dawson. American Beauty is pretty terrific, in spite of the million rose petal falling from the ceiling jokes that came it it's wake. Worst thing to happen to cinema in the 90s was Vertical Limit. And Sam Mendes is the shit. (Speaking of which, why haven't people been ranking Road to Perdition among the best comic book movies of the last decade?)
2. Faaaaaart.
From all outward appearances, Mendes' latest film Away We Go (via Focus Features June 5th in N.Y. and L.A.) is a cultural counterclaim to the ideas set forth by last year's Revolutionary Road in that maybe, just maybe, two people in a relationship don't have to delusionally paint one another into ideals in order to stomach life together. Flick stars Maya Rudolph and John Krasinski- one of the most on the level dudes I've ever met- from a screenplay by novelists Dave Eggers & Vendela Vida. And this song off the soundtrack by the Scottish-raised Alexi Murdoch has been nothing short of salvation these last two weeks.
The Away We Go soundtrack will be available online June 2, and hits brick and mortars June 23 via Zero Summer.
Fuck my life, I'm moving to Greenpoint this weekend and I have so much shit left to do.
