I swear, I've seen and heard more references to Richard Kelly's Southland Tales this past week than I did when the film was first released last November. In conversations with friends, casual eavesdrops on the subway, and even my little brother's current away message, it's cool to see people finally coming around on a neat little flick that all seemed too quick (and eager) to dismiss.
More often than not, I feel this phenomenon occurs with words- a few months ago, the word "boon" was used more in the course of a single week by the people in my life than ever before or since. That too was satisfying, as we all remember the reactionary lashing out against Ken Loach when he used the word at Cannes in 2007.
Southland Tales' final chapter is titled "Wave of Mutilation", which is also the title of a song on the ever growing personal list "Songs That Rock Band is Dangerously Close to Ruining for Me". In watching the film's trailer on DVD this week though, I was reminded of the below remix, which appeared on a Pixies' B-Side collection. It's quite humid in New York, and I'm quite broke/desirous of a cigarette right now, but I promise: this mix is so fucking good that if you listen to it loud enough on some okay speakers, you'll get this awesome, dull buzz in your teeth like chomping a piece of Bazooka Joe deep into a molar cavity.
