It's hugely admirable of Regina Spektor to so gently and perfectly balance artistic and commercial achievement as her star flowers into a supernova, her latest single off the soundtrack to Disney's The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian being a choice example. Five months deep into a year that kicked off with the baroque pop muse playing the runway for Oscar de la Renta's Fall '08 collection, Regina kicks out a cutting track for a massive fantasy film that manages to avoid all the OH GOD OUR FRIENDS HAVE DIED maudlin gravitas of Annie Lennox' "Into the West" from The Lord of the Rings.
"The Call" owes a structural credit to Spektor's own "Samson", no doubt. But the line between affected and affecting is danced gracefully and on pointed toes here, and whatever may be begrudged for self reference is immediately made up for by the very thing that makes that song, and indeed the performer herself so special: fragile splendor, and an unmatched voice of possibility.
