You know who was the shit back in the day? Sponge. I was going through some old CD's this past weekend when I came across 1996's Wax Ecstatic, and the songs I first heard as a chubby kid on the edge of puberty have proved to be the perfect soundtrack to my generally shitty mood this week. That re-discovery prompted me to track down a copy of 1994's Rotting Pinata, one of a couple of my older brother's CDs that served as very my safe introduction to angsty rock music back home in suburban Massachusetts. Between waiting to hear back from colleges I've applied to, waiting to hear about a promotion at the office, not having any money, and an unforseen apartment disaster, I'm plenty ready to put on a God Lives Underwater T-Shirt and rush home to 1995 to watch this week's new X-Files.
I'm quite aware of what a non-post post this is.
Sponge has still got a MySpace page, though across their six studio albums, lead singer Vinnie Dombroski is the only original member still with the group. Former guitarist Joey Mazzola has since found success with another hometown act, The Detroit Cobras. The songs up on their MySpace are pretty lame, with a special groan reserved for "I Did It Without The Drugs (Hats Off to Amy Winehouse)"- the lamest blatant attempt at a viral phenomenon since Everclear's "Hater Jesus".
When writing these one-off stream of concious articles, there is nothing more important than a strong closing sentence. Mope!
Sponge "Plowed"
Sponge "My Purity"
