Justice's Gaspard & Xavier are notoriously eclectic. Now, in this day and age, saying that an artist is "eclectic" is like like saying that you're "media savvy". If you have an iPod, you're media savvy. If you can figure your way around an RSS feed, you're media savvy. To say that a DJ crew that rose to prominence in the US largely on the strength of their remixes and mashups is "eclectic" is waaay redundant. What sets Justice apart is the duo's playful precision in their setlists- like their aggressive take on Metallica's "Master of Puppets", or dropping The Ronettes' "Be My Baby" in the middle of today's Essential Mix showcase.
This June '07 set has proven to be pretty divisive amongst fans, and Justice have done nothing less than continue their (apparently) controversial, brow-raising beat making into '08. People are quick to point to a lack of any cohesion through the set, that it's too all over the place. How can anybody stomach their dance music with gravitas? Yeah, it's a little clippy and schitzed out, but this is a shining example of the finesse that puts these French boys miles beyond that same unimaginative Brooklyn bar DJ that lays the beat to J-Kwon's "Tipsy" over the strains of "Sweet Home Alabama" for the millionth time.
Embedded below, the June 10th BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix plus three bonus jams. Pete Tong puts it best at the sets' start: "French electronic, independent, par excellence." And I got crazy love for anybody that drops Earth Wind and Fire to open their mix:
Justice "The Party (LA Riots Remix)"
Justin Timberlake "LoveStoned (Justice Remix)"
World Famous Audio Hacker "Do It Well (D.A.N.C.E. Mix)" (Justice vs. J-Lo)
We'll make 'em turn their heads every place we go.
